Mac and the environment

Mac has put together a life cycle impact report to show the company´s environmental footprint. Apple uses this comprehensive life cycle analysis to determine exactly where their greenhouse gas emissions – all 10.2 million metric tons of them – come from.

Manufacturing

3,873,000 metric tons greenhouse gas emissions

Manufacturing including the extraction of raw materials and product assembly accounts for 38% of Apple´s total greenhouse gas emissions.

Transportation

547,000 metric tons greenhouse gas emissions

5% of Apple´s greenhouse gas emissions are a result of transporting products from assembly locations to distribution hubs in regions where products are sold. By reducing packaging over 40% between 2006 and 2009, Apple ships 50% more boxes in each airline shipping container that saves one 747 flight for every 32 000 units shipped.

Product Use

5,353,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions

The use of Apple products generates 53% of Apple´s total greenhouse gas emissions. This is why products are designed to be as energy efficient as possible.

Recycling

90,600 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions

1% of Apple´s greenhouse gas emissions are related to recycling.

Facilities

275,718 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions

Apple´s facilities including corporate offices, distribution hubs, data centres and retail stores account for 3% of total greenhouse gas emissions. in the U.S. Apple provides its employees with alternatives to driving their own vehicle to work. Many employees take advantage of Apple´s public transportation incentives. And each day, up to 600 Apple employees ride Apple´s free biodiesel commuter coaches to work.
