Physio´s role in the fight against climate change

I come from a medical family and every now and then I get the chance to browse through the various medical journals this country has to offer. Recently I laid my hands on a veryinteresting article which outlined how living a healthy lifestyle benefits your body as well as the planet.

What is good for the climate is good for health

The article points out that the measures needed to combat climate change coincide with those needed to ensure a healthier population and reduce the burden on health services. A low carbon diet (especially eating less red meat) will mean less cancer, obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Physiotherapy fights against climate change

Behaviours that physios encourage in their patients are closely aligned to many suggestions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Cycling instead of using a car, walking instead of driving to the shops, getting entertainment from sports, dancing and the like instead of sitting on the couch watching TV or playing PlayStation, eating more fruit and veg and reducing meat consumption. Using public transport cuts down carbon emissions and encourages fewer accidents which physios also are in support of.

So what are you waiting for go out there, get healthy and at the same time do your bit in the fight against climate change. It´s a win-win…!

(thanks mom)
