Colin Firth´s wife, Livia, on her eco chic Oscar dress

Colin Firth’s wife dazzled on the red carpet in a dress made entirely from scrap material — proving that sustainable fashion is as glamorous as it is worthy

When Colin Firth´s eco-campaigner wife realized she would be on the awards season trail, she decided to dress in a different ethical design for each event. Of course she saved the “piece de resistance” for the biggest night on the calendar — the Oscars.

Having chosen one of her favorite sustainable designers, Orsola de Castro, who we told you about here, the Italian film producer who also has her own eco-boutique called Eco in London couldn’t wait to use the red carpet to show Hollywood that eco-fashion can be glamorous too. “A number of very gifted ethical designers have told me how hard it is for them to get near an event like the Oscars so I certainly feel a responsibility to showcase the very best! Cut, finish and detail is amazingly important,” she told British Vogue earlier this month.

After months of discussions with the designer, Livia walked the red carpet next to her Tom Ford-attired husband, in a stunning long black gown with a ruffled shoulder detailing — made entirely from scraps of waste material. Paired with a Roger Vivier clutch, also constructed from leftover scraps in designer Bruno Frisoni’s office and ethical pink diamonds by Cajella — the look was complete.

And Livia could not have been happier with the end result. Writing on her blog for British Vogue as she got ready she said: “It feels amazing. Orsola de Castro and her team have excelled themselves. It is exactly what I wanted.”

And it seems her fashionable friends at the star-studded Oscars agreed as they lavished compliments on not only her husband´s acting skills but also her dress. “Carey Mulligan — who looks so beautiful in Prada — loves my dress, as did Julianne Moore [in Calvin Klein]. Nobody can believe it is made from waste,” she wrote later on her blog. We couldn´t agree more.
