It´s harvest time in the winelands of the Western Cape and on Saturday we were invited to eco network member, Heron Ridge´s wine farm in Stellenbosch. Thank goodness the heat we´ve been having here in the Cape, receded for the day and we had a delightful lunch on the farm and learnt all about the harvesting process.
Heron Ridge, is a 4ha wine farm situated on the Stellenbosch wine route, about 40minutes outside of Cape Town, and is run by mother and daughter team Jane and Pippa. Their wine making process is a complete labour of love. At harvest time Pips spends just about all day everyday in the cellar with Philemon who helps out on the farm. On Saturday Pippa and Phil were in the process of making Rosé. Rosé is made from grapes that are pressed and the skins are then discarded rather than left in contact throughout the fermentation process, as with red wine making.
As we strolled through the vineyards, Jane explained to us the difference between biodynamic and organic farming. In a nutshell, biodynamic farming uses the cosmos – astronomical sowing and the planting calendar – in the farming process whereas organic farming means that no pesticides, insecticides and herbicides are used to spray crops.
After working up a thirst and an appetite we were a delicious lunch of homemade bread and vegetable pie and of course we had some wine! We had the Heron Ridge The Flight 2006 shores – which was delectable and perfect for during the day as it wasn´t too heavy which some reds tend to be. After lunch it was back into the cellar for Pips – no rest for the wicked during harvest time I´m afraid, while we relaxed with a cup of coffee on the patio.
All in all it was a wonderful day out in the countryside…and seriously worth the visit. The personal tour allows you to walk away with a new found respect for wine farmers and with more insight into the wine-making process.
Heron Ridge holds tastings by appointment only. Click here to make a booking.
Thanks again Jane and Pips…
