Karl Lagerfeld´s eco-themed Chanel Show

The fashion designer highlighted global warming by creating an Arctic catwalk in Paris last week

Karl Lagerfeld turned environmentalist this week when he showed his latest collection to a backdrop of a giant melting iceberg — highlighting global warming in the most stylish of ways.

Having received their invites featuring a sketch of the endangered polar bear (drawn by Lagerfeld of course) guests such as Lindsay Lohan and Vanessa Paradis arrived to the Chanel show last Tuesday morning to find the Grand Palais in Paris transformed into a giant melting iceberg.

Using 240 tons of ice to create the Arctic landscape, the models splashed through icy waters to show the latest Fall/Winter 2010 collection, which included classics such as Chanel tweeds, adapted for the eco-theme, their edges encrusted with glacial jewelry.

Another nod to the designer´s ´save the planet´ theme was the inclusion of fake fur, an unusual move for Paris Fashion Week especially and one that will please the PETA protesters. Nicknamed the ´Kaiser´ in the fashion world, the influential designer told Britain´s Telegraph: “Fake is not chic — but fake fur is,” adding on the eco-theme of the show: “It´s not global warming, it´s global-cooling!

Guests might have been chilly but at least the message was as loud and clear as it was icy.
