Green for Gucci

As carbon footprints go, we all know the fashion industry has a mighty one. Still, not many of the big fashion houses have implemented significant, environment-impacting decisions to make the business a little easier on our flailing planet. Gucci, however, have just revealed a number of eco-friendly plans that will dramatically reduce the brand’s effect on the environment. Most attention is being paid to cutting paper consumption and reducing carbon dioxide omissions – packaging will be redesigned using only FSC Certified, 100% recyclable paper.

So will this new eco-friendly drive see the creative process changing as a result? Gucci creative direct Frida Giannini says no. “This project proves that you sacrifice nothing creatively when working with environmentally friendly materials,” she explains. “The new packaging is very beautiful and evokes perfectly the combination of Gucci’s values and the traditions for which it has become renowned since Guccio Gucci founded the company in Florence nearly 90 years ago. I believe we have a collective responsibility towards future generations to minimise our impact on the environment.”

So, the new Gucci shopping bags will have a de-bossed (you know, not sticking out all fancily, like) logo. The garment and ribbon bags have all been changed from polyester to ribbon.

Gucci’s eco initiatives will be seen in stores across the world – all 284 of them – from this month.
