New York’s tallest building is going green

The Empire State Building unveiled a $2 million interactive exhibit on Monday that highlights the building´s efforts to become more eco-friendly.

Visitors to the observation deck will pass a series of video panels explaining the push to reduce energy use and other changes. “It’s about small changes that have big effects,” said Jamie Monberg, who helped design the exhibit for the firm Hornall Anderson.

The Empire State Building is undergoing a $20 million project to reduce energy use by 38 percent and cut energy costs by $4.4 million annually over the next 15 years. Changes include refurbishing each of the building’s 6,514 windows, retrofitting the cooling system and installing web-based controls for each tenant.

Visitors will learn about the sustainability project on three eight foot pillars with video panels highlighting the building’s innovations and ways people can reduce their own energy consumption. “We have four million visitors a year. Everyone has to come through this spot,” said Tony Malkin, who has been overseeing the Empire State Building sustainability team. Malkin also said he hoped to promote sustainability by promoting the economic benefits to going green.

You are going to make more money doing this than by not doing it,” Malkin said. “If you want to change the world, move the markets.”
