The Shaman´s Journey

liveeco´s newest member, Gerry Rothquel, escapes the stresses of everyday life with the Shaman´s Journey at the new Africology Spa in Rosebank

Walking into the newly built phase 2 of The Zone in Rosebank, I was already excited to see the new Africology spa. The new section of the mall is brilliantly lit with natural light and populated with very trendy stores and pavement restaurants to enjoy after a relaxing treatment.

Upon entering the spa, I was greeted by the store manager, Catherine and my designated therapist, Maralarato, who had been waiting expectantly for me, a really nice personal touch.
The spa oozes luxury and natural beauty with a distinct sense of African chic. The interior is designed with rich texture and warm colours which complimented the aroma of natural essential oils which envelop your senses.

There is a ‘sensation station‘ as you enter the store with displays of Africology’s products. Visitors are welcome to smell, touch and feel the beautifully packaged jars and bottles, all of which have a unique texture and smell. It was like a little sensory adventure.

Maralato led me into the treatment room for my ‘Shaman’s Journey Massage‘, which was decorated with dimmed lights, relaxing music and heated flooring. The linen was super soft and comforting; you can see they spared no expense.

My body experience began with breathing exercises, deeply inhaling the natural essential oils ensuring my body relaxed deeply before Maralato’s magical hands touched my skin. My feet were cleaned with a warm compressed towel, which deepened my comfort even further. She then sprayed a scented mist over my face to refresh the senses and began the 90 Minute ‘Shaman’s Journey Massage’, moving across from my face, neck, décolletage and shoulders to my arms, legs, torso, then finishing off with the back of my legs, back and shoulders.

Every movement was amazing and as I thought she had completed a section on my ever grateful and relaxed body, she would place hot stones on my skin and repeat the movements with them. I was in heaven and with each passing moment, the outside world disappeared into a distant place and complete relaxation with superior sensation took over. I was so comfortable with Maralato that I fell into a light sleep which I did not want to return from.

Walking out of the spa, I was in a daze yet strangely centred within myself – I was completely relaxed and at peace. The whole experience had been warm, friendly, sincere and was notably filled with sensations to stimulate all senses (texture, smell, beauty, sound and above all natural).
