The Starke Effect: Harvest time

Over the last few weeks I have unfortunately not been able to spend as much time as I would´ve liked to in my garden, which is a pity with the unseasonably dry winter we have been experiencing in Cape Town. So this morning, after my run, I decided to tend to my Starke Ayres veggie garden, which was in need of some TLC.

As you´ll see in the images below, my rocket has become a bit of a weed so I cut it back a bit as it was overshadowing my spinach and marigolds. I decided it was now time to enjoy the fruits of my labour and used some of the rocket I cut back in some scrambled eggs and wholewheat toast for brekkie – delish!

I also took out some of the red lettuce, which I am going to use in a salad over the weekend as well as some italian parsley and coriander. There is actually so much there that I am going to have to offload some to family and friends and it´s definitely best enjoyed fresh from the garden!

See how my sweet peas are starting to sprout, can´t wait to try these.

I think I´m going to pick some spinach these evening and use it for our dinner party tonight… this should definitely impress 😉

Love the colour of this swiss chard spinach

Unfortunately I did see a snail in the veggie patch, which i threw out, so I think this is what has been eating my cabbage leaves.

I am so loving having my veggie garden. It is so rewarding to go outside in the morning, pick the fresh produce – you yourself nurtured and harvested – for your next meal and then enjoy it right away! It also provides peace of mind as you know exactly how the food was handled and what was used on (i.e. not harmful pesticides or insecticides).

So if you´ve got some time on your hands this weekend, I would definitely recommend heading down toStarke Ayres and pick out some winter veggies. It´s a perfect way to spend some time outside and make the most out of this warmer weather we´ve having as you never know when it may come to an end!
