282 Crosses: Seeing the Extent of the Crisis

Yesterday, 22 September 2011, was World Rhino Day.

To show their support against the senseless killing of rhinos for their horns, Green Renaissance put up 282 crosses along the Sea Point promenade in Cape Town – to show the public the extent of this conservation crisis.

It’s one thing to see the number 282 on a piece of paper, or on a computer screen, but to actually take in how much space 282 crosses takes up gives some indication of the devastating situation that we are facing in South Africa.

It’s important that people are aware of this reality, which is why Green Renaissance put these crosses up in a public space – to create a simple but effective point of engagement for all members of the public.

Last year, Green Renaissance was also involved in a similar outdoor campaign – using chalk to mark out the “bodies” of rhinos, once again along the well traversed Sea Point promenade, timed to coincide with the time of day when people take their daily walks along the ocean.

It’s sad to think that a year later, the situation is worse. With an increase in social networking drives and events like today’s World Rhino Day peaceful protest outside parliament though, it’s clear that there is a need, and the means, to make an important difference. If you have time please go to Sea Point promenade and walk through the crosses to fully understand the plight of our Rhinos, I am running the promenade on Saturday morning so hope they will still be there.

One Rhino killed is one Rhino too many.
