Designers Are You Ready? Avant Garde dress is Back!

Live Eco & The Design Academy of Fashion are proud to present Avant Garde dress 2012. The upcycled fashion design competition now in it’s second year will take place from the end of August until 24 November 2012, where it will culminate in a fashion show with eco flair at The Green Expo at the CTICC on 24 November 2012 at 1pm.

The competition requires DAF’s 2nd year students to use old clothes to upcycle an eco chic look, adhering to this year’s theme, “climate smart”. This year’s Avant Garde dress also involves DAF’s 1st year’s who will be showcasing an upcylced accessories range which will be on show at the Live Eco stand at The Green Expo in Cape Town.

Nikki Seegers, founder and editor-in-chief of Live Eco, explains: ‘Avant Garde is such an exciting project for us as there is nothing like it currently in South Africa. Old clothing is used by DAF students to create eco-conscious, beautiful designs. The students are required to get creative by dying materials with natural dyes such as wine or tea. The fashion industry is one of the most wasteful, yet significant, industries out there, so it’s important that we start teaching our future clothing designers and retailers that there is another, more eco-conscious way of doing things. Another benefit of the project is that all left-over clothing donations are distributed to various charity organizations in the province.’

Jackie Burger, editor of ELLE magazine SA will be joining the judging panel once again this year.

The DAF 2nd year winner will be walking away with an internship at Pick n Pay clothing, a Body Shop hamper worth R2 500, a pair of David Green sunglasses, Yves Rocher product to the value of R1 000 and 3 months worth of free coffee from Vida e caffe!

Our 1st year winner will be awarded with a pair of David Green sunglasses, a R500 Body Shop hamper & R500 worth of product from Yves Rocher.

We will keep the public updated on Live Eco during the design phase and will host a competition on www.liveeco.co.za in November where the public will have a chance to vote for their favourite designer and stand a chance of winning a pair of David Green sunglasses to the value of R1 500, just for voting!

The Avant Garde dress runway show will be held on 24 November 2012 at The Green Expo at 1pm at the CTICC in Cape Town.

If you have old clothing that you would like to donate to the project please email us on info@liveeco.co.za and we will arrange collection.
