Eat More Energy!

energy food

Our lifestyles usually result in us feeling drained. Think long hours at the office or in traffic, plus other demands life throws at us on a daily basis. It’s no wonder you might hit a slump or feel like a zombie. Here are some foods to perk you up.

Choose (correct) carbs

Carbohydrates receive a lot of flack, but they are the body’s first choice for fuel. Avoid the sweet carbs that boost your blood sugar levels but then make them drop, and rather choose foods that stabilise your blood sugar over many hours. Think whole-grains, rice and cereal.

Magic magnesium

When you’re feeling drained, your body could be trying to tell you to top up on some magnesium. Great sources can be found in nuts such as almonds and Brazil nuts.

Give your brain a boost

In a business meeting but can’t seem to concentrate? During the next break, eat a lean meat sandwich. Lean meats like chicken and turkey are proteins that contain tyrosine which boosts the brain’s dopamine and norepinephrine, helping you stay focused.

Mix milk and fruit

This is a great energy blend because it gives your body vitamins and calcium in one go. It’s helpful before gym and also a smart idea when you feel the afternoon slump hit. Just trade in your coffee or tea for this power juice instead.

Go bananas

Ever heard of the benefits of having a banana before hitting the gym? It can spark your energy levels, helping you work through that tiring routine. Bananas also contain potassium that keeps your nerve and muscle functions working properly. But potassium levels in the body can decrease if you’re going through a stressful time or you’re working your body too hard with exercise, so it’s essential to make sure you add potassium to your diet regularly.
