Cape Town’s festival season is well on its way! Be a festival fashionista this summer with these fabulous tips and image inspiration guide.
Since Woodstock festival in 1969, young people everywhere have used music festivals as a platform to flaunt their style. Here in South Africa, where we are blessed with a vast spectrum of festivals – from the psychedelic world of trance parties to Ramfest’s hardcore atmosphere; the hipsters of Rocking the Daisies to the quirky antics of Afrika Burn and Flamjangled Tea Party –there is no excuse why you too can’t participate in this fashion parade.
A place to express yourself, limitless between sky and grass, festival season is the time to rock out in dress up. That tutu you’ve been too scared to wear for fear of appearing too ‘over-the-top’? Awesome. That cowboy hat from high school you just haven’t been able to bring yourself chuck out? Great! Corsets, panda suits, snake skin boots, fish nets, flower garlands, union jack jumpsuit… now is their time to shine. In fact, anything sparkly, loud, bright, garish or wildly inappropriate is perfect for a festival party.
In saying that, seeing as festivals usually call for camping and a general ‘roughing it’ attitude, practicality also plays an important role in festival fashion. Strong walking shoes, a sun hat and element-protecting garments like long sleeves and leggings play a vital role, as do sunnies and stylish sling bags.
But most important of all, festivals are about being larger than life and having loads of fun, so make sure your look reflects that. Check out Cape Town’s Babette for gorgeous pieces and see below for Live Eco’s favourite festival fashion looks:
