Green Jobs on the Rise

Eco-friendly jobs have been in the spotlight in recent years, but now research shows they’re on the increase.

What is a Green Business?

The focus of eco companies is to have a positive influence on both the environment and community. According to a survey done by global communications and public relations agency Cohn & Wolfe, consumers from various countries say that it’s important for companies to be environmentally friendly. In another study by job site MonsterTRAK, a whopping 92% of young professionals say that they’re more inclined to work for an environmentally-friendly company than a non-green one.

Greenest Companies in South Africa

Recently Standard Bank Group was ranked as SA’s greenest company of the year in the 2012 Newsweek Green Rankings. Out of a possible score of 100, Standard Bank scored 71.7. Another company that is doing well in the eco-friendly stakes is Volkswagen SouthAfrica. This year the company was awarded with the Top Green Organisations Award as well as the prestigious SJM Flex Environmental Award for their implementation of environmentally responsible manufacturing standards.

Tips on Finding Your Dream Green Job

1. Keep Your Search Open

Don’t think that a green job means you’re limited to certain career fields. Most eco careers have the same positions as non-green jobs: think marketers, designers, project managers and accountants.

2. Show Your Passion

People who are in green careers are passionate about and committed to preserving the environment in which we live. Show off your passion and energy, but make sure it’s backed up by the latest news and happenings in all things green so that you show your interest and knowledge.

3.  Build a Greener CV

Participate in green activities that will not only reveal your passion but also give your CV a nice touch, such as volunteering, getting involved in green community endeavours or supporting green initiatives.
