Eat for the Earth this World Environment Day

Eat for the Earth on 5 June 2013

World Environment Day is on 5 June and for the third year running Yuppiechef is challenging people to host a meal to raise funds and awareness for Soil for Life.

How it works

1. Register a meal at www.eatfortheearth.com and add a plant to the Yuppiechef live plant wall
2. Ask guests to click on your plant to make a donation to Soil for Life
3. Host your meal on or before 5 June, World Environment Day

Something a little different: the plant wall

To acknowledge people eating for the earth this year, Yuppiechef has set up a real plant wall at Yuppiechef HQ and for every meal registered will be adding a plant. A live feed of this wall is being streamed to www.eatfortheearth.com and the Yuppiechef team will be showing real time plant love…

Plant love?

The more RSVPS and donations a registered meal gets, the more ‘plant love’ the Yuppiechef team will give the plant on the wall. There will also be live daily broadcasts from the plant wall and interesting things going on – including storytime, shower-hour and special visits.

“We wanted to do something different for Eat for the Earth this year, to make it a little more engaging for people taking part. We are looking forward to loving those little plants and hope to raise significant awareness and funds for Soil for Life to help them continue their fantastic work” – Marina Pape. Yuppiechef community manager

Background

South Africa has one of the highest rates of income inequality in the world and many families do not have access to enough fresh fruit and vegetables to stay healthy. Soil for Life is a Cape Town based organisation tackling the issue of food insecurity one household at a time by teaching people to start their own food gardens. Heroes? Absolutely.

Yuppiechef runs an annual initiative to raise funds for Soil for Life. In 2011, R30, 000 was raised through Eat for the Earth and in 2012 this amount was doubled with over 168 Eat for the Earth meals registered and over R60,000 raised.

“We live in a world of plenty, where food production outstrips demand, yet 870 million people are undernourished and childhood stunting is a silent pandemic. To create the future we want, we must correct this inequity. We must ensure access to adequate nutrition for all, double the productivity of smallholder farmers who grow the bulk of food in the developing world, and make food systems sustainable in the face of environmental and economic shocks.” – United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon
Who can take part and how are funds raised?

Anyone is welcome to host a meal, whether from South Africa or beyond. In previous years we’ve had individuals, businesses and schools taking part and hosting meals in homes and in classrooms and in return asking guests to make a donation online at www.eatfortheearth.com.

Where do the funds go?

100% of funds raised go towards helping Soil for Life continue their important work. The sky’s the limit – and there will be prizes for the most earth-friendly and inspiring meals hosted.
