‘Vegan’ and ‘braai’ might sound like an oxymoron. Vegan diets, after all, mean that you have absolutely no animal products. However, with a bit of creativity you can still celebrate National Braai Day, no meat required!
Vegetable Kebabs
Chop up some of your favourite vegetables, such as red peppers, green peppers, mushrooms, onions and zucchini, and then place them on a skewer stick before braaing them. A clever trick to make them even tastier is to douse them in barbeque sauce or herbs and oil beforehand.
Non-Meat Sausages
There are many products available that look like beef or chicken, but have no animal products at all. A great one to try is Fry’s braai style sausages that do not contain any meat, preservatives or genetically modified ingredients. These products are also a great source of fibre and protein.
Braai Potatoes
What is tastier than warm, roasted potatoes? If you love them, then you will also enjoy a potato braai. Pour honey, butter and herbs over a few potatoes or sweet potatoes, then wrap them in foil. Place them on the coals. You can check when they are ready by poking them with a toothpick. If they are soft, they can be taken off.
Vegetable Bread
Bread is a delicious braai staple. Fill a bread loaf with a potato and vegetable mixture and then place it on the coals to toast. You can even make braai broodjies (braai sandwiches) with slices of bread. On one slice, layer any foods of your choice, such as a tomato, cheese and cucumbers. Place the second slice on top and then pop it on the grill. When the one side is toasted, flip the sandwich over and toast the other side. Mmm, yum!
