Facts You Don’t Know About Sharks

Sharks are often misunderstood. In media they are sometimes deemed as the killers of the ocean, if you think of classic horror movies like Jaws. However, there are some little known facts about sharks that might just change your mind about these amazing creatures.

1. Shark Attacks are not as Common as We’re Led to Believe

Approximately 30 people die due to shark attacks every year. This means there is a greater chance of being killed from a lightning bolt or a bee sting. Man kills sharks more than sharks pose a danger to him. For every person that is killed in a shark attack there are two million sharks that are killed by people!

2. Sharks are Not All Deadly

There are over 375 species of sharks and approximately only 30 have been known to attack humans. What’s interesting is that many people are afraid of sharks and yet they pose just as much danger as it would be dangerous to, say, climb into a lion enclosure. It’s good to have a bit more perspective when dealing with sharks, as with any animal in the wild: we need to respect them.

3. Sharks Ensure Healthy Oceans

Sharks are being erased faster than they can reproduce and yet they play a vital role in the health of the oceans. Sharks are apex predators of the sea. This means that they are at the top of the food chain and keep marine life in a healthy balance, while regulating the ocean. If sharks are not the apex predator, this could result in the extinction of many species. There have already been localised collapses of certain fisheries and ecosystems because of the removal of sharks.

4. Sharks Fight Global Warming

Oceans are an important defence against global warming as they contain life forms that are able to absorb most of the earth’s carbon dioxide, otherwise known as global warming gas, converting it into life-giving oxygen.

Half the oxygen we need to live is produced via phytoplankton photosynthesis. Phytoplankton absorbs carbon dioxide and transforming it into oxygen. Sharks control the numbers of species that feed on phytoplankton. If sharks decrease in numbers, there will be a decline of phytoplankton, which will negatively affect the ocean’s oxygen.

Easy Ways You Can Save Sharks

1. Don’t Consume Shark Meat

It’s not safe for the shark numbers or you – shark meat contains high mercury levels that can be extremely dangerous to your health.

2.  Avoid Products that Contain Squalene

Some make-up and health products contain shark liver oil known as Squalene. Rather choose to go the cruelty-free route, such as by viewing ocean-friendly products on Selfridges.

3. Avoid ‘Tag and Release’

When going on ocean excursions during vacation times, avoid those ‘tag and release’ fishing trips. During these, sharks are caught for tagging, but they can be hurt in the process and even die.
