Sass & Bide Goes Tribal for a Cause
Australian designers, Sass & Bide, have teamed up for the third time with the International Trade Centre and the United Nations, this time to create a limited edition shopper, clutch and purse.
The designs embrace those tribal elements that are so central to the sass & bide aesthetic with the breakthrough being that these are created by women from the Kikuyu, Masai, Samburu & other East African tribes.
The ITC’s Ethical Fashion Initiative empowers women through work, thereby enabling families and whole communities to change their lives. Emphasis is placed on training – both in management and in crafts – to allow the unskilled to join the workforce, while skilled artisans can keep up-to-date with Western market demands. Inventive reuse and recycling is always part of production.
Sarah-Jane from sass & bide had the following to say about the initiative, “It is inspiring to be working directly with the East African Artisans, and to be influenced by their tradition, culture and daily lives. By partnering with these talented craftswomen, it allows them to support their immediate families and greater communities. It is rewarding to see that their wages are used to educate their children. This one step forward towards the fight against poverty.”
Not charity. Just work.
