Plan your big day with the help of these eco wedding tips

Hollywood has become fiercely in tune with eco-friendly weddings, with many celebs tying the knot in a totally green way. Here are some gorgeous earth-conscious weddings of the rich and famous. Get inspired for your own big day!

Stunning Sustainability

When she married Christopher Jarecki in 2005, actress and activist Alicia Silverstone chose organic simplicity for her special day. The reception was an eco-friendly feast, with cocktails served in recycled mason jars, bar tops constructed out of 200 year old lumber, and candles made of organic beeswax. The menu was vegan and decadent – some highlights include grilled tempeh with black rice and chocolate-almond midnight cakes with raspberries.

No-Waste Wedding!

Actress Amy Smart had a gorgeous rustic wedding with her groom, model/actor Carter Oosterhouse, back in 2011. They got married at their home in Michigan, which allowed them to use local vendors and, since the ceremony and reception were held in the same place, this reduced everyone’s carbon footprint because guests didn’t have to drive from one to the other. One of the highlights of the wedding was its waste-prevention: in spite of 220 guests attending, only 1/2 a bag of trash was accumulated by the end of the day! This was because the couple tried to compost and recycle as much as possible.

Strictly Come Organic

Staying true to her eco-friendly values, actress Natalie Portman and groom Benjamin Millepied chose a beautiful vegan wedding idea when they got married in 2012. Instead of notching up carbon miles by having flowers for the ceremony flown in, they used wildflowers that were indigenous to the coast where they exchanged vows. The menu was completely vegan and even the parting gifts were kind to the earth: guests were given wildflower seeds.

Other noteworthy celebrity eco wedding ideas:

1. Recycled Fashion

Keira Knightley married musician James Righton in 2013 in a fabulously upcycled wedding gown. It was a Rodarte dress she wore to a pre-BAFTA party years ago, but she made amendments to it in the form of ballet pumps and the throwing over of a white Chanel tweed jacket. Proof that even celebrities know how good it is to choose sustainable fashion!

2. Social Conscious Gifts

When Christina Aguilera and her then-groom Jordan Bratman tied the knot in 2005, they decided on a really cool eco idea for their guests: instead of giving gifts to the couple, they should donate money to an organization linked to helping New Orleans after it was struck by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

3. Inviting Nature to the Party

Anne Hathaway used the same wedding planner that created Natalie Portman’s vegan big day. One of the great things about the actress’s wedding day in 2012 was that it was inspired by the natural scenery of the Big Sur in California (also the location for Portman’s big day, by the way), incorporating the use of natural décor – branches and flowers – in both the ceremony and reception.
