Skincare Products to Lose – and Others to Use – in Spring

spring skincare

You know that you should change your moisturiser from a thick one in winter to a lighter one in spring, but there are actually other changes that should be made to your skincare routine when the weather warms up. Here are a few products to put on ice.

Slow Down on the Retinoids

Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A and used as part of an anti-ageing skincare plan, but if you use them in spring you risk harming your skin. This is because they make your skin more sensitive to the sun, which can be damaging. If you simply can’t part with your retinoid products, be diligent about wearing sunscreen. And if you’re going to be outdoors for a large amount of time, stop using retinoids for a few days before and after your bout of sun worshipping.

Skip the Thick Foundation

Makeup trends reveal that fresh and natural skin is in, and it makes sense during spring as you don’t want to look trapped under so much foundation. You might still need some coverage, though, so trade in your thick foundation for a CC cream. CC creams are great for targeting your skin’s problems, such as redness and unevenness, so that it looks brighter and healthier without covering your face in lots of goop. Try Juice Beauty’s award-winning organic CC cream that will make your skin radiant and evenly-toned.

Bump up Your Exfoliation

If your winter skincare plan has focused more on lathering on the heavy moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated and not so much on exfoliating it, then that should definitely be part of your spring skin regimen. Exfoliate once a week to get rid of dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface so that your skin is renewed and radiant. Remember to follow it up with moisturiser afterwards to lock in that dew-freshness. Try Hey Gorgeous face and body scrubs that contain natural and delicious ingredients, such as oatmeal and pomegranate.

Get Tinted

Swiping on some bronzing powder was a great way to invoke the spirit of summer, but in the hot weather it can be drying to your skin. Simply switch it for a tinted moisturiser which is much more hydrating while offering some coverage, plus these products often contain refreshing botanical and skin-nourishing ingredients, such as algae and antioxidants. Try Jane Iredale’s Dream Tint that contains algae as well as other natural ingredients to prevent loss of hydration and boost the skin’s elasticity.

Amplify Your Sunscreen

Hopefully you’ve been wearing sunscreen throughout the cold months because our wintry days are still gloriously sun-soaked here in SA, but when spring comes chances are you’re going to spend even more time outdoors so you need to carry that SPF with you every single time you’re out in the fresh air. Should you rely on your SPF-containing makeup products? The answer is no. Although your foundation might contain sun protection, it will not be reaching every part of your face – and you shouldn’t be neglecting SPF on your ears and neck, either. Added to this, you aren’t going to be layering on the thick foundation several times a day – which is what you should do with SPF – so you’re not going to be getting enough protection from the rays.
