Are You A Climatarian?

A climatarian is someone who makes food choices based on their positive influence on the planet while ditching foods that cause it strain

If we are what we eat, then by being a climatarian, you are saving the planet with your food choices every day.

What’s a Climatarian?

Okay, so if you’re not sure what a climatarian is, here’s a crash course: a climatarian is someone who makes food choices based on their positive influence on the planet while ditching foods that cause it strain. For example, climatarians:

  • Won’t eat foods that have a high carbon footprint, such as meat.
  • Choose foods that don’t require a large amount of resources, such as water, to be produced.
  • Eat foods that are locally produced as much as possible so that they don’t notch up lots of carbon miles to get from farm to plate.
  • Try to cut down food waste as much as possible.

How Climatarians Beat Food Waste

People waste a lot of food. A report by the United Nations Environment Progamme (UNEP) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) found that almost a third of food that’s produced worldwide goes to waste in food production and consumption. Climatarians help to fight this by trying to deal with food in such a way that as little of it as possible goes to waste. This can include using fruit peels as compost after you’ve enjoyed the fruit; storing food leftovers so they can be eaten in new meals; and taking care when peeling veggies and fruits to prevent cutting out too much of their flesh.

To be fully climate-friendly you should pay more attention to how your food is made, where it comes from and not waste it

Earth-Friendly Diets: Do They Go The Distance?

Are you a climatarian if you’re vegetarian or vegan? Sure, you’re avoiding animal products that take their toll on the planet – animal agriculture contributes more greenhouse gas emissions than the transport sector, for instance. But, to be fully climate-friendly you should pay more attention to how your food is made, where it comes from and not waste it. All of this contributes to greater earth-friendly practices that make a huge difference to the state of our planet. And it’s empowering to know it starts on your plate.
