Green Theme at Fashion Week

As summer settles in for most of our friends in the Northern Hemisphere, the key players of men’s luxury fashion are showcasing their visions for Spring/Summer 2011 and it looks like eco-luxe is finally settling in as more than just a trend. From Etro to Dolce & Gabbana, a number of major Italian labels leaned to green for their seasonal style statements at Milan Men’s Fashion Week.

Italian paisley power house Etro paid tribute to the Date Palm, the original inspiration for the paisley seed design. Their show, titled ‘Tree of Life,’ absorbed the sacred symbolism and powers behind trees featuring organic cotton tailoring matched with soy and nylon fabrics. To honour their muse, fashionistas were gifted a tree-plant to take home after the show.

Over at Iceberg recycle and reclaim was the theme-de-jour inspired by The Little Prince’s dedicated care for his planet. Paolo Gerani’s range for 2011 included jogger cloth and tailoring cotton constructed into jackets and t-shirts decorated with duct tape in cool ice blues and chalky greys.

For the mainline Dolce & Gabbana collection, the design duo celebrating their 20th year in business sent models out in jute sweaters, raw hemp and linen. Their D&G showcase inspired by Manet’s Déjeuner sur l´Herbe emphasized a return to the simple life with bags stuffed with vegetables and baguettes as models trailed down a grass runway.

Although the statements were mild contrasted to their eco-fashion counterparts, with a high street tradition to co-opt catwalk style, 2011 could be the year when green is the colour on everyone’s mind.
