Plastics recycling drop-off point now available in the East Rand
A plastic recycling programme is up-and-running in the East Rand. The Plastic Industry’s Enviromark, PETCO and the Polystyrene Packaging Council (PSPC) has worked together with Flora Farm, one of the biggest garden centers in the East Rand, to establish a new plastic recycling drop-off point.
Flora Farm, Corner North Rand Road and Trichardt Road, Bartlett, Boksburg, boasts an extensive garden mall, secure and adequate parking, a wellness centre, restaurant, a children’s playground and a host of other leisure boutique shops. And now they are also helping consumers do their bit for the environment by offering containers for all your plastic recyclables.
To get started with plastics recycling, combine all the different types of plastics – PET (water and carbonated softdrinks bottles), HD (milk and shampoo bottles), LLD (plastic bags), polystyrene (packaging, take away containers) etc – together and drop it off at Flora Farm. The recycler will then sort it further into the different polymer groups.
PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is identified by the number 1 polymer ID code, and is generally used for water and carbonated soft drink bottles, is recycled into fibre for pillow and sleeping bag fillings, roof insulation, automotive carpeting and now, for the first time in Africa, back into bottles and containers. Polystyrene, the number 6 plastic, is recycled into picture frames, cornices, skirtings and curtain rods, seedling trays, hangers, stationary and decking.
