Winter style and trends

You want to feel cozy and warm in winter, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look hot! Snag some winter style that will not only protect you from the harsh elements but also make you feel fired up with confidence.

So, what are some of the big winter style trends to take home?

Embrace the waist

Sexiness is a big part of winter apparel this year, so make sure you show off your feminine curves. Think belted coats and pencil skirts that will reveal some sexiness without being too frilly. These are also comfortable without being boring. A great fitting coat or jacket is like your asset-flaunting denims that will never let you down.

Ditch: the big cover up. Although it’s cold and you’re used to layering yourself up to within an inch of your life, don’t wear clothing that doesn’t complement your body. Winter clothing should be warm but never hide your shape. Flattering pieces are timeless.

Class it up

Bold colours form a contrast to last year’s winter shades. So dare to bring a bit of colour to your wardrobe in the form of jewel tones. Also focus on items that have details such as sparkles, metallic sheens or other embellishments. Coats with interesting collars are also a big trend. To make your winter wardrobe more sustainable, choose colours and embellishments that complement other items in your wardrobe so you won’t get tired of them after one season.

Ditch: Drab shades! Sure, dark colours are always going to be a classic, but don’t be bound to them too tightly this season. Infuse some colour into your wardrobe that’s more eye catching. If bright colours are not really your thing, start small. For instance, dark blues are a great alternative to wearing plain black.

Your best leg forward

Leggings are still going to be trendy this winter, but with extra appeal. Some trends include wearing patterned shorts or mini skirts over them and then teaming them up with knee-high boots. In winter you might feel that there are less fashion choices at your disposal because you can’t wear summer dresses, but that’s why items like leggings are a great, comfortable and affordable alternative to being stuck with pants and denims.

Ditch: Leaving the accessories behind. Leggings can be boring if they’re not part of a well-thought outfit. If you’re wearing plain black leggings that have been your wardrobe staple for a couple of years, it’s time to shake them up a bit. If your leggings are demure, try to make the rest of your outfit striking. An idea would be to concentrate on accessories that will add flair: hats, bags and shoes are all big this season, plus they’re an easy and affordable way to look trendy this winter.

Man, I feel like a woman!

Tap into your testosterone by bringing in a bit of masculine energy to your look. Think: funky ties, crisp white shirts and high-waisted pants. The infusion of masculine touches in fashion is making a big splash and the bonus of wearing such clothing is that it’s versatile: perfect for a day out or a day at the office.

Ditch: being too masculine. You don’t want to look like you raided your boyfriend’s wardrobe and put everything on! Rather mix the masculine influences with another trend: the ‘lady trend’ that is a throwback to 50s Hollywood. Think pencil skirts, bow-tied blouses and tailored shifts, as recently seen on the runway by Gucci, Donna Karan and Jean Paul Gaultier. This adds a touch of elegance and feminine appeal to your look.
