Gary Harvey´s dynamic gowns, cobbled together from unusual materials such as baseball jackets, newspapers, and discarded denim, are not for the wilting wallflower. The London-based former creative director of Levi Strauss will be strutting his stuff at the GreenShows on Sunday at 311 E11: Village Green, a set of condominium residences that is targeted to be the East Village´s first LEED Gold-certified building.
VAUTE COUTURE
Designed by Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart for steely Chicago winters, Vaute Couture finds a snows-swept city shivering for the embrace of its chic vegan coats. Bundle up with the cruelty-free toppers at the GreenShows on Monday.
THIEVES
From Canada comes Sonja den Elzen and her precisely sculpted Thieves collection, which marries the Toronto native´s love of sustainability with her passion for design. The “Thief,” says den Elzen, seeks to “avoid any compromise between natural self-expression and high-end fashion.”
JOANN BERMAN
Bronx-born Manhattanite Joann Berman doesn´t have much of a commute to the Village Green on Monday. Her dazzlingly avant-garde clothing is made almost entirely from reconstructed vintage togs. Berman will also be parading her pieces at the Williamsburg Fashion Weekend on February 20.
WILLIAN
For designer Keia Bounds—who has styled wardrobes on Chapelle´s Show, What Not to Wear, and Law and Order: Criminal Intent—Willian is a “strong, sophisticated woman with an innate sense of style.” Watch for her one-of-a-kind reconstructed garments, made from vintage scarves and fabrics, on Tuesday at the GreenShows.
POPOMOMO
Also making an appearance at the GreenShows on Tuesday is Lizz Wasserman, who will be feting the latest designs from her delightful quirky Popomomo label. Created as a response to the unchecked consumerism Wasserman witnessed while working at Urban Outfitters and Free People, Popomomo is designed to transcend seasons or trends.
SAMANTHA PLEET
Formerly one-half of Bodkin (along with Eviana Hartman), Samantha Pleet decided to focus on her eponymous collection shortly after she and Hartman received the inaugural Ecco Domani sustainability design award in 2009. The Philadelphia-native-turned-New Yorker also has a menswear line, Patrick Pleet, which she co-designs with her architect husband.
DEUX FM
Designed for the woman who “broadcasts both style and ethics,” Nova Scotia-based Deux FM makes its New York Fashion Week debut on Wednesday at the GreenShows. Its founder and designer, Anna Wilkerson, is no stranger to the city that never sleeps, however. She studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology before starting her clothing line in 2006.
EKOVARUHUSET
The Ekovaruhuset (House of Organic) design collective makes its second appearance at the GreenShows on Wednesday. Featuring the work of such talented fashion luminaries as Johanna Hofring, Meiling Chen, Tor Söderin, Desiree Hammen, Anja Hynynen, Maja Gunn, Mika Machida, Kaori Yamazaki, Righteous, and Eko-Lab, if there´s one thing Ekovaruhuset knows how to do is bring the house down.
C. MARCHUSKA
An emerging eco-label that is one to watch, C. Marchuska by Christine Marchuska and Brooke Bresnan showcases classic silhouettes at affordable prices. Want to chat with Marchuska and Bresnan in person? C. Marchuska will be showing its wares at the NOW ´10 Showcase from February 20 to 22.
