James Cameron´s blockbuster Avatar was one of at least four green-themed movies that vied for an Oscar at last night´s red-carpet Academy Awards.
Avatar, which depicts a world of stunning beauty that´s threatened with destruction, was nominated for nine awards, including best picture, of which they won three – Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects – Cameron has called it an environmental cautionary tale.
Also nominated, in the documentary category, was Food, Inc., which shows the shocking and unsustainable food practices of U.S. factory farming, and The Cove – who won this category, which reveals a brutal dolphin-killing operation in Japan.
There was also the Fantastic Mr. Fox, which was nominated for animated feature film and music (original score). This film, which features the voices of George Clooney and Meryl Streep, is based on a children´s book by Roald Dahl. It depicts a daring revolt against industrial meat giants.
While these four films have gained Hollywood´s attention, more than 150 other eco-themed ones will be showing in Washington, D.C.´s Warner Theatre this month at the 18th annual Environmental Film Festival.
