How Green Is Your Love Life?

Written by: Jessica Solomons

So you’ve loaded up on organic food, traded in your old beauty products for eco-friendly alternatives and started recycling. But what about your love life? If you really want to go green, you might want to look at how those romantic rendezvous’ (and naughty night time antics) are affecting the environment.

Author Stefanie Iris Weiss’s recently published book, Eco-Sex, offers advice on how to green your love life and make date night an environmentally-friendly affair. Like any good handbook, Eco-Sex covers all the bases from raising green children to making sex safer – for the environment that is.

So how do you lower your love life’s carbon footprint?

Firstly, let’s dispel the most common myth: a green love life equals a boring love life. As you’ll come to understand when reading Weiss’s book, you can become a green bedroom goddess without making big sacrifices.  If you want to give your love life a green makeover you simply need to do your homework. When it comes to celebrating a special occasion or spoiling your partner, for instance, instead of visiting your usual dinner spot, Weiss advises you opt for a restaurant that offers an organic menu or sources its food locally, that way you can enjoy a good meal while also doing your bit to save the planet.

Another practical tip is to reduce toxic carbon emissions by keeping your car locked in the garage and enjoying each other’s company in the great outdoors instead. Venture into the mountains for a morning bike ride together or, if your significant other prefers something a little less physically demanding, take a romantic stroll on the beach. For the men; if you want to surprise your girlfriend or wife with a gorgeous bunch of flowers, make the greener choice and buy a bouquet from your local farmer’s market instead of the grocery store, many of which are guilty of stocking flowers covered in pesticides. It’s as easy as that!

But going green can, and should, according to Weiss, also extend into the bedroom. So how exactly do you practice the art of “eco-sex”? Unlike some of the crazy sex trends on the market, “eco-sex” is definitely suitable for beginners! When it comes to buying the bedroom staples like condoms and lubricant Weiss suggests you read the label and where possible opt for the products that use natural or organic ingredients. Other tips; save electricity and set the mood by switching off the lights and burning scented candles instead, wear lingerie made from natural fibres or bamboo and, for the sexually adventurous, avoid buying battery operated sex toys.

Whether you’re single and dating or married with kids, Weiss’s book has advice for all life stages so no matter who you are, you can learn the art of Eco-Sex.
