The Bosman Long Lunch Fairtrade celebration, held during the annual Wellington Harvest Festival on 17-18 March 2012 was a roaring success. More than 1500 people, including myself, enjoyed the pleasant Boland weather while visiting this picturesque Cape Winelands town and its beautiful country-style wine cellars.
Bosman Family Vineyards, an eighth generation family winery with Fairtrade accreditation, celebrated the benefits of Fairtrade at their Long Lunch. Boudewijn Goossens, executive director of Fairtrade Label South Africa and his staff presented patrons with information about this fantastic global movement that not only exists to encourage fairer trading conditions and opportunities for producers in developing countries, but also to invest in their businesses and communities for a sustainable future.
Arno Carstens, solo artist and lead singer of The Springbok Nude Girls, along with guitarist Kevin Leicher, entertained all with mind-blowing acoustic renditions of some of Arno’s most popular hits. The crowd was also treated to the first ever Long Lunch performance of the Bosman Farm Choir. The choir was established in November 2011 and their repertoire consists of a wonderful selection of South African folk music.
Visitors to the Bosman Long Lunch enjoyed delicious country food prepared by Marc’s Restaurant and a tasteful range of Bosman wines in the cool shade of ancient oak trees and giant gazebos set up on the green lawns outside the 250 year old Bosman cellar.
The Pebbles Project, a Cape Winelands charity which aims to enrich the lives of children from disadvantaged backgrounds by assisting in their special educational needs, was the benefitting charity of this year’s Bosman Long Lunch.
