Introducing Hemp Eyewear, sunglasses made from a hemp fibre composite, designed and manufactured by Sam Whitten. ‘Research into hemp and its possible applications led to the discovery of hemp and flax fibre composite sheet material which are impregnated with an eco friendly binder,’ said Whitten.
It is the strongest plant fibre in the world and is a more sustainable material than even wood.
The composite sheets require compression moulding under heat to form and cure the material which is normally done with machines. Once the layers in the frame and legs are assembled, the sunglasses are then coated with an eco-friendly bio resin to add extra waterproof and strength properties. Pre-order a pair here.
