Host the Perfect Banting Braai

Get your banting braai on this Heritage Day, 24 September.

At this point in time, everyone knows what banting is and has at least one friend who follows the Tim Noakes’ diet religiously. Luckily, meat is on the green (go!) list so most of the meat that you will serve at your braai is A-OK among banters. The difficulty is preparing desserts and side dishes that don’t include carbohydrates or sugar. Here are a few suggestions:

Aubergine braaibroodjies with cheese and tomato

Crushmag has the perfect banting substitute for everyone’s favourite braai add-on (the braaibroodjie!). This carb free version can be prepared in 15 minutes. All you need is two large aubergines, olive oil, 200g hard cheese such as cheddar or mozzarella and four large, sliced tomatoes. After you’ve sliced the aubergine, brush it with olive oil, salt and pepper. Add grated cheese and sliced tomato and cook over your braai coals until the cheese has melted and the aubergine has browned. Get the full recipe here.

Banting-friendly potato salad

A potato salad is the quintessential side order at a braai. You can recreate a banting version of this carb-heavy accompaniment by making it with cauliflower instead of potato. To make the mayonnaise, beat one cold egg with 1 teaspoon of vinegar and half a cup of extra virgin olive oil and beat until creamy. Simply replace the potato chunks with cauliflower florets. Banting onion rings

Deep fried food items like onion rings, samoosas and spring rolls are usually too carb-heavy for people following the banting diet. This recipe by Illanique van Aswegen, however, makes it easy to recreate onion rings without sending your insulin levels skyrocketing. The ‘dough’ consists of eggs, crushed garlic, coconut flour, gruyere/parmesan cheese, sesame seeds and a pinch of cayenne pepper and salt. For the full recipe, click here.

Rooibos tea gummies

Most banters will be familiar with fat bombs, which are little morsels of high-fat, chocolatey goodness. The Rooibos tea gummy is a traditional spin on the fat bomb (and seeing as a braai is a local custom, turning a fat bomb treat into a rooibos tea gummy makes a lot of sense this Spring Day). All you’ll need is coconut milk, xylitol, ground cinnamon, butter, rooibos tea, ½ a vanilla bean and gelatin powder. Get the full recipe here.
