By being aware of your food, how much you’re eating and also what it is you’re craving, you become more tuned into your body and avoid giving into your cravings.

When you read the title of this article, you might have expected advice on how you can sit in silence and magically shed the excess kilos from all the comfort eating you’ve been doing. Although visualisation can be a good thing, the type of meditation we’re talking about it mindful eating. Here’s why it’s so good for your weight-loss plans.

Slow Down!

The problem with our eating habits is that we often rush through our meals, not giving our minds or bodies a chance to process that we’ve eaten. The result? We’re left unsatisfied, which makes us want to eat more. When you move away from your phone, computer or TV, and sit down to eat, you enjoy your food more which increases your feelings of satisfaction after a meal. This prevents overeating.  By staying relaxed when you eat, you also help to decrease cortisol levels in the body. Increased levels of cortisol and stress are connected to fat deposits in your mid-section.

Break the Food-Feeling Connection

By being aware of your food, how much you’re eating and also what it is you’re craving, you become more tuned into your body and avoid giving into your cravings. Ask yourself if you’re really hungry as this will enable you to override food cravings when you feel angry, sad or rejected, because then you can do something more constructive instead, such as going for a walk.

Only Eat What You Really Like

Food should be a pleasure. You should really want to eat every single meal, so choose nutritious foods that are tasty, and enjoy them with all your senses! Look at how delicious they look, smell them, savour every bite, and so on. This makes you more present. Sometimes when you’re battling with weight issues, you might hate food or have a negative relationship with it. This is bad because it can cause you to go on starvation diets, which will cause you to overeat because your cravings will be intensified. Focus on enjoying food so you don’t deprive yourself. Food keeps you happy and healthy, and can be indulged in without all the drama.
