How to Buy Less Over the Festive Season

eco christmas tips
One of the most common feelings over the festive season is that of striving for perfection. But keep some perspective: the festive season is a short time and then it’s over.

You probably accumulate a lot of stuff over the festive season but also buy a lot in the form of gifts for friends, co-workers, family, yourself, the home, extras for the kids, and so on. It adds up to a lot! But what happens to all that you buy once the season ends? It all becomes clutter, waste and debt.

Forget Perfect and Have Fun

One of the most common feelings over the festive season is that of striving for perfection. But keep some perspective: the festive season is a short time and then it’s over. Instead of spending lots of money on items that will be packed away once the holidays are over, such as Christmas tree decorations or home décor, rather try to make do with what you have.  Your home doesn’t have to be something straight out of a magazine. I guarantee you that things you have in the house that can add festive cheer to your home without you having to spend money on new items. This prevents waste, too. So many things can be used to decorate your tree, from costume jewelry and baked cookies, to Christmas cards you’ve received.

Plan Purchases

Before you get side-tracked by so-called “great deals” at the store when buying gifts, make a list of what you need for every single person in your life. By having a set idea for gifts, you can also see if there’s something you could make yourself or recycle (as long as the gift is in perfect condition, of course!). When you have a clear idea of what you need, you can take your time to shop around for the best prices without getting flustered to the point where you impulse buy.

Replace Gifts with Food

Everyone loves delicious food over the festive season so you can use this to your advantage. Instead of exchanging gifts with loved ones, why not organise that you’ll bring home-cooked meals for your Christmas party instead? This is a great way to enjoy each other’s cooking, have a great time together, and save money.

Focus on Spending Quality Time

What do you remember most about previous Christmases? Sure, you might recall receiving lovely gifts, but chances are you will hold onto memories that made the time special. It’s really about spending quality time with loved ones. Rather focus on this, which is something money can’t buy, and you’ll have a memorable season without having to spend a lot of money.

Rather do your shopping when you feel content and calm

Know When to Avoid the Shops

You will be heading to the shops to spoil those you love with gifts (as well as a gift or two for yourself) but be sure that you’re not hitting the shops when you’re at risk of spending too much money. An example is if you’re feeling stressed or down, and need some retail therapy. The trick is to do something else when that feeling arises, such as hitting the gym or going to the beach. Then, rather do your shopping when you feel content and calm. This will prevent you from spending a lot of money on things you don’t really need.

Christmas is a stressful time but it doesn’t have to put you into debt. Focus on what really matters and get creative to stay within your budget.
