Keep your white's brighter with these eco laundry tips

Wearing white is a trend that doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon, but if you hate the thought of your white items becoming discoloured, it can put you off purchasing them.  Added to this, you don’t want to use harmful chemicals on your clothes to keep them in great condition.

You don’t need to miss out on looking great in bright white – here is how to make your items look fabulous long after you’ve bought them.

Go Natural

If your white clothing is already looking a little dull, you can brighten it up with washing soda. (This is similar to baking soda, but meant for your laundry.) Just half a cup added to your medium load of washing will do the trick.

Buy Safe Oxygen Bleach

Oxygen bleach is safe for the environment because it’s biodegradable and non-toxic. You can find it online. It not only keeps your white clothing white, but also works to give coloured fabrics a brighter lease on life.

Get Rid of Stains

You can’t help it: sometimes stains happen. Be sure to have lemon juice or white vinegar on hand to tackle them as they strike. You can use lemon juice in different ways to eliminate a variety of stains.

Dry it in the Sun

It’s not only better for the environment to air dry your clothing but leaving your white clothing to get some rays for a few hours can be an easy way to brighten them. Make sure that every part of your clothing gets the same amount of sunlight so that it will be bleached evenly.  The bonus of this is that by giving your tumble dryer a miss, you’re lengthening the lifespan of your clothing – tumble dryers make fabric wear out faster!

How to Hang Clothing

A bit of clothing maintenance is important to increase your fashion longevity.

  • Use the straps that are sewn into the fabric items if they are provided to hang your clothes. These enable you to hang them properly and prevent stretching.
  • Instead of hanging your knitted items, pack them away in a drawer so that they don’t lose their shape.
  • Don’t hang your items too closely together as this will crease them. Avoid ironing your clothing (as this can damage it over time) by keeping space between your garments.
  • Never use wire hangers as they can cause a variety of problems, such as make the items lose their shape or look out of proportion.
